On top of the world in another summery roof bar

Roof bar at South Place Moorgate Lon 2012

A ROOF BAR to rival those in NE London at the Queen of Hoxton, Shoreditch House, the Boundary, the roof park in Dalston, and others is to open in Moorgate this autumn.

Designer-entrepreneur Sir Terence Conran is putting the bar — artist’s impression above — atop his latest project, a luxury hotel, South Place, named for its location at No 3 in that street. Between Liverpool Street and Moorgate, its public-transport links to Hackney are good, which makes it viable as a fallback for Hackneyites who lack a spare bed when visitors come calling.

Owner DandD London, formerly Conran Restaurants, says the hotel aims to be more “meet than sleep”, picking up on the capital’s  “cultural diversity, local neighbourhoods, understated wit and a sense of self”.

DandD adds that as well as the rooftop restaurant and terrace and bars, the building will include 79 bedrooms with 24-hour service, gymnasium, five meeting and private dining rooms and residents’ games room. Prices will start at £185 a room a night; high but probably good value in expensive London.

A window on the ground floor has been earmarked as a showcase for a £5,000 art prize, open to MA graduates. The contest is now closed and the winner is due to be announced today Monday 30 July 2012.
