War hero works in Dalston

Victoria Cross winner Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry

One of England’s greatest heroes is working in a store in the Kingsland Centre.

Johnson Beharry, Britain’s highest-decorated serving soldier, is one of the soldiers staffing the Army Showroom in the Dalston shopping arcade. The store gets about five inquiries a day.

Johnson, who was born in the UK colony of Grenada, was given the VC for twice saving colleagues under enemy fire. To this day, he remembers little of the incident at Al Amarah in Iraq when the the 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales Royal Regiment was attacked.
