…with credit to Hackney council’s tasteful but striking Christmas 2011 decorations of the square in front of the town hall, built in 1934-1937 (architect Lanchester and Lodge). Now a grade II listed building. In 1995 the council designated the art deco(ish) square a conservation area. The editor of this website is still enjoying his Christmas break. He commends it to all who can do the same.
A happy Hackney Christmas to this site’s lovely readers. And thanks for the tips and ideas

Thanks for running such a great and informative blog about Dalston. I look forward to your reporting in the New Year!
It seems terrible value for money to me. Islington – which I think has very nice lights – spent just £11,700! [Hackney sometimes shows a Church of England-like naivety when it comes to buying services. That Islington’s Christmas lights cost less than a tenth of Hackney’s is shocking. And why did the BBC have to use the Freedom of Info Act to get details? Isn’t expenditure of public funds a matter for public information? – Ed.]
Bah, humbug! You refer to “Hackney council’s tasteful but striking Christmas 2011 decorations”. Yesterday the BBC did a piece on London borough’s expenditure on Christmas lights. Hackney spent the most at £165,000! [Thank goodness I didn’t say “good-value”. — Ed.]
