A LAST-MINUTE appeal for funds to set up what could be called London’s most-viewed artspace has raised £21,474 – more than the target – after a news report published on this site last Friday.
Village Underground of Shoreditch EC2A 3PQ had appealed to Loving Dalston for help to publicise its worldwide trawl for people to back the art collective’s attempt to improve the security and presentation of The Wall in Great Eastern Street below the Tube Train offices.
Dan Davies, of Village Underground, told Loving Dalston: “Considering that on Friday we were at around 30% and 100 pledges, your post must have played a significant part.” By the Monday deadline, 207 people had pledged money. Power of the Mauer, as a German might say, well, an English-speaking German, or an… oh, never mind.
The outdoors gallery comprises four recesses in the old brickwork. Covering the recesses with glass frames will enable The Wall to become a permanent art space, one that will be seen by a huge number of people.
Village Underground founder Auro Foxcroft, said: “We’ve calculated that in 2012 over the Olympic months we’ll have more visitors than the Tate, Southbank and Barbican combined.”
