Culture-lovers live in Hackney (and elsewhere)

RESIDENTS of Hackney, Islington and the City are among the most cultured in London. More than 80% of Hackney people attended cultural or live entertainment during the last year.

The figure is even higher over the river in Southwark, where just under 90% of people answered Yes to a survey commissioned by Aka, an entertainment marketing agency.

Only 45% of respondents in Kensington and Chelsea, one of England’s richest boroughs, had gone out to a show in 2011.

The pollster asked 1,600 adults throughout the UK what they thought of the city’s culture and entertainment. More than half considered London to be “the cultural capital of the UK” and 36% would prefer to see a play or musical in London than anywhere else in the world. Astonishingly, the survey was carried out for Aka not by the University of the Blumin Obvious but by a firm called One Poll.

More than 60% described cultural and/or live entertainment as being “hugely important”.

The cultured-Hackneites discovery resonates with reports that the borough has more under-30s with university degrees than any other borough in England and Wales, a claim that appeals greatly to advertisers and corporations.
