EVERY WEEK I take £5 to Ridley Road Market in Dalston, Hackney, London E8 2LH, to spend on seasonal food, obviously not including items likely to be already in a kitchen, such as sauces, oil, herbs and spices. On Friday I tell you what I have chosen and publish a seasonal recipe.
Well, that is the plan — but this week I have been laid low by illness, a temporarily debilitating one that seems to have affected many of my friends, and to my huge regret I have had to dictate this note by phone to the editor. He was sympathetic and wished me well. (Obviously: I want my columnist back — Ed.)
Tip: beyond Hackney and beyond food, Watney Market, East India Dock Rd E1 2PR, is a good but ltittle-known source of materials and clothing such as in the picture above. In any case, the market is worth a little trip because it is, of course, also good for food, and some traders there fear for its future.
