Most of its collection of Landranger maps by the Ordnance Survey has vanished, leaving staff puzzled about why the shelves of one whole classification, picture above, of the Mare Street venue would be emptied. .
Perhaps cost is a factor: at £7.99, a Landranger map is not cheap, although online versions are available.
The series covers the topography of all the UK and is popular with walkers and cyclists for its detail and clarity.
The library has decided to order new copies, which should arrive early in the new year.
Hackney council told Loving Dalston that staff this month December 2014 reported the loss of 138 Ordnance Survey maps, presumed stolen, from Hackney Central Library.
A spokeswoman said: “We will be working to improve security at the library and we are taking this opportunity to review our selection of maps in line with customer demand and the availability of online resources.”
Police are looking for someone who never asks them for directions.
