SHOREDITCH’S MP has returned to the fray in her battle for better broadband for Britain, especially for Silicon Roundabout.
Hackney South and Shoreditch member Meg Hillier was commenting to Loving Dalston after Chancellor Philip Hammond’s budget promise that local authorities could bid for some of a specified £740 million to link 5G mobile networks to fibre-optic systems.
Shoreditch, at the centre of the designated Tech City, has some of the slowest internet connectionism the world.
She said: “The Government has made many promises about delivering superfast broadband but we need to be clearer about whether this latest pledge will work any better than previous pledges.
“The reality is that many businesses need high speeds and wide bandwidths
“It is incredible that there are not spots in Shoreditch, one of the top three tech hubs globally.”
The Labour MP, who also heads Parliament’s powerful public accounts committee, added: “A pledge of money is one thing but there now needs to be real action.”
