Open within a fortnight. Or so says Hackney council

THE LIDO IS to reopen on Thursday 4 January 2018 after delays that continually distressed swimmers and embarrassed owner Hackney council.

The council closed the pool nine months ago for urgent repairs after a difficult search for a contractor able to tender.

A unrepentant town hall brags that “swimmers will be able to enjoy”:

  • a new reception area
  • new turnstiles allowing ease of access
  • fully redesigned and refurbished changing rooms and toilet facilities
  • new internal lockers (all lockers, including those on poolside, are now £1 returnable)
  • full refurbishment of the pool tank and tiles
  • new additional external showers.

Note that the pool’s operator GLL/Better has raised the amount of money users have to find for a locker by 500%. However, the 20p was not returnable.

Extraordinarily, the periphery work has still not finished. All the council can say is that “the poolside accessible changing facilities” will be refurbished “early in the New Year”, a phrase so vague it is often used by publicly accountable bodies at year changes.

Community services councillor Jon Burke admitted that there are still “snagging items” and some “quality issues” to address. He means “problems” and confusingly adds that “the contractors have finally completed the work” then talks about the completion of “essential” works.

Clearly, we are still not being told the full story. Loving Dalston has questions, eg, about the budget of £1,462,600.78 (don’t you love that 78p?). For example, are any penalties being sought?

Lido users who have kept their membership during the closure will automatically receive a month’s free membership in January 2018.
