COLVESTONE PRIMARY at Dalston E8 2LG is a classic Victorian school that always used to look in good shape.
Until at some stage dowdiness was allowed to set in: the bicycle rack-planters, for example, in the front garden of the caretaker’s cottage were unused for so long they started to visibly rust and the plants died. Some passers-by even offered to buy one or two of the costly items.
The long row of 1860s iron railings at the front of the Grade 2 listed building, probably unique in design, became in sore need of rubbing down and repainting… but nothing was done.
Hackney council, however, has come to the rescue. It wants the railings fully restored. Work is to start next month March 2022.

* Emboldened underscored words in most cases indicate a hyperlink, a reader service rare among websites. If a link does not work, it is probably because the site to which the URL refers has not been maintained. Links to articles in The Guardian do not imply any approval of that newspaper’s historic involvement with slavery.
