You’ll never guess the table that Hackney now tops (almost). No, not hipsterness… Oh, you guessed

Live in northeast London, Hackney even? Forgotten you left a window open; a burglar won’t
SOMEHOW FOUND ENOUGH MONEY to put a deposit on a flat in the northeast of our fine city? Well, before you offer on that particular over-priced bedsit here’s news that might get you a reduction on the asking price.

Analysis of Office of National Statistics local crime data for 2020-2022 suggests that Hackney is London’s most burgled area.

Researchers at ConservatoryBlinds4Less, using 2020-2022 ONS crime data, broken down by area. CB4L finds that Hackney has the second highest rate of criminal offences and incidents related to burglary per head in the UK, apparently making it the capital’s most dangerous place for burglaries.

The 10 most burgled places in the UK

Position Name Crime rate
1 Middlesbrough 10.03
2 Hackney 8.72
3 Westminster 8.56
4 Haringey 8.3
5 Hammersmith and Fulham 7.41
6 Islington 7.38
7 Southwark 7.34
8 Tower Hamlets 7.27
9 Leeds 7.2

Statistics from several British police forces indicate summer as the likeliest time for the glove-clad fraternity to shoulder their tool-filled rucksacks and start casing the streets, apart from the weeks around Christmas (lots of gifts hidden in the home).

Warm, summery months have higher rates of home break-ins than wintry months (we’re out in the sun or away on holidays and more relaxed than when we’re desperately trying to keep warm).

Hannah Jackson, who headed CBL’s analysis team, told Loving Dalston: “Aside from fitting security measures such as alarms, CCTV, and secure locking systems, residents should take precautions to minimise temptations for opportunists… timed lights, leaving a radio on when they go out and ensuring open kitchens, living areas, and conservatories are kept off-display while they’re out can make a difference.”

Buy some curtains or blinds, she added, and, if you have a conservatory, use blinds for bi-folding doors, or roof blinds, to block out what’s inside.
