Hackney eateries: some to love, some to avoid

THE FIRST public hygiene ratings of Hackney commeercial food handlers have toppled big names and elevated others. The New York Times-famed Mangal I was rated only satisfactory although Mangal II near by scored 5/5.

The borough’s two cinemas, the Rio and Hackney Picturehouse, which both serve food and alcohol, also scored the maximum.

Rio Cinema: high standards
Rio Cinema: up to high standards

Two restaurants called Yum Yum, one in Stoke Newington serving Thai food, the other in Lower Clapton Road, offering Caribbean cuisine, top-scored, along with the Hoxton Apprentice. Tragically, that fine venue has just ceased trading.

The praise-garlanded Lardo (“best pizzas in London” — The Times) won top marks, but the Little Vietnam in Shoreditch did badly, Tay Do, for example, scoring 0 — “urgent improvement necessary”.

Shanghai, the Kingsland restaurant loved by Friday-nights karaoke fans, was rated 1 — “major improvement necessary”. Sömine Restaurant, which controversially got a council contract for an in-library coffee bar, merited a 2.

Hipster favourite Dalston Superstore scored 3, “satisfactory”, A Little of What you Fancy in Kingsland Road 2 — “improvement necessary” — and the multiculti Ararat bakery in Ridley Road Market 1. Café Oto, the artsy café-bar, said to have been named the coolest spot on the planet by Italian Vogue, scored 3, as did the music venue Shacklewell Arms, which really could be one of the coolest places in the world.

Of Hackney pubs, the underrated Albion in Goldsmiths Row, Haggerston, and nursery rhyme legend The Eagle (“in and out of”…), got 5 each.

Corporate emphasis on hygiene paid off as Marks and Spencer in Mare Street and Morrisons in Stamford Hill scored the maximum. Tesco got 4 or 5, apart from its Express at 523 Kingsland Road, a worrying 2. Iceland in the Kingsland Shopping Centre scored 5, and nearby rival Sainsbury’s 3 (although its Local at 100-104 Stoke Newington High Street got a 5.

Chains traditionally do well. McDonald’s in Mare and Kingsland High streets, Domino’s Pizza, in Mare Street and Stamford Hill, Pizza Express in Curtain Road, Nando’s in Kingsland and TFC in Dalston all scored 5/5. Percy Ingle branches varied from 2 to 5.

If you ever want a cleanly prepared meal and you’re short of money, try to get yourself beyond the front desk of Stoke Newington police station (use your imagination). Its canteen scored 5.

Catriona Stewart, head of the Food Standards Agency’s ratings team told Loving Dalston: “It’s good news for people who eat out and buy food in Hackney that they can now check the hygiene ratings when choosing which place to visit. This national scheme gives customers a glimpse behind the kitchen door, and food outlets in Hackney will see that a high rating is good for business.

“The rating is available for anyone to view on our website, or via our free app when on the go.”

One thought on “Hackney eateries: some to love, some to avoid

  1. I think everyone should try these foods: fish and chips, peri-peri fried chicken, ribs, and burgers!

Simple food: good suggestion. After all, we are British. — Ed.
