Artist Bobby Baker lights up Dalston Square

LIVELY ART exhibitions are launched in Dalston almost every week but “The Expert View” is different. It’s more public than most and it’s by people who are not all artists. Perhaps it is not even art.

A lightbox installation, in Dalston Square, above, not far from Dalston Junction station, it features the pictures of artist and co-curator Bobby Baker of Stratford-based Daily Life, alongside the work of psychiatrists, psychologists, support workers, doctors, nurses and people with experience of mental distress.

The theme is expertise and how it relates to personal experiences of art and mental health.

It raises fascinating questions, such as: does lived experience count as expertise, what are the benefits of collaboration and sharing knowledge?

It also poses the questions, where does art fit in and who is the expert? And who is to say?

Baker, an acclaimed artist and former patient at a day centre, says: “Art was my way of asserting my own expertise.”
