A BIG UP, or perhaps “a bake-up”, to Free Cakes for Kids Hackney. In just under six years it has made more than 600 birthday cakes for children who might otherwise have gone cakeless.
The group’s volunteer bakers make and deliver multicoloured Smarties cakes, My Little Pony creations and other cakes to deprived children around the borough to celebrate their birthday. Even a small fairy cakes costs a lot to buy or make.
Referrals are taken from local organisations to help families who find it difficult to provide luxuries for their child. The British Red Cross is one of them. Gloria Ho, from its Hackney branch, said that in some cases the free cake was the first birthday cake a child had had. Other children were so touched they burst into tears.
